Union College Partnership with VRI – February 22, 2019
Union College is pleased to announce the recent partnership with the Virginia Research Institute. Union College President Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D., and Virginia Research Institute President Eugene de Silva, Ph.D., signed the memorandum of agreement Friday, February 22.“We are excited to work with the Virginia Research Institute and give their students the opportunity to work with an accredited U.S. program,” said Dr. David Williams, Dean for the School of Professional & Graduate Studies at Union College.The Virginia Research Institute, USA is a non-profit research organization that was established over 15 years ago with the vision of providing students with diverse opportunities to progress in life through education. The Institute primarily offers services and support to students in Sri Lanka, and is currently expanding its operations throughout Asia. The Virginia Research Institute holds exclusive rights to administer the General Education Development (GED) certificate in Sri Lanka.The agreement will direct Sri Lankan students who are interested in online undergraduate and graduate programs to Union College. Located in Barbourville, Kentucky, Union College has served the Appalachian region for more than 130 years. Union strongly supports a diverse academic environment built upon a liberal arts foundation and integration of higher order thing into all of our learning. Union has several undergraduate and graduate degree programs, that offer 6 starting points (terms) each year that include 8-week courses. This allows learners to accelerate through a degree plan in order to accomplish their career and education goals. A fifteen year old, Eugenie de Silva, today set a record by graduating with her Master’s degree in Intelligence Studies with a concentration in Intelligence Analysis with a 4.0 GPA – Summa Cum Laude from the American Military University (AMU) on May 15th, 2014. Her progress to setting herself apart from her peers began at the age of seven when Eugenie completed the John Hopkins University state test for Verbal and Mathematics Talent and won for the state of Virginia. Later, at only nine years old, Eugenie began her high school studies, which led her to graduate from the Missouri University High School with a college preparatory high school diploma at the age of eleven. She then began studying at AMU at eleven years old and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Intelligence Analysis last May (2013) at the age of fourteen with a 4.0 GPA – Summa Cum Laude. As a result, Eugenie holds the world record for being the youngest person to accomplish this goal. At thirteen years old, Eugenie had already begun completing Master’s level courses at Harvard University where she is planning to finish her second Master’s in Legal Studies this August. This May, Eugenie officially began her Ph.D. in Politics (Intelligence Studies) at the University of Leicester in England.She taught her self to play the piano at the age of six and she played soccer for AYSO beginning at the age of eleven. As a result, she was the assistant coach for a U10 boys’ soccer team at the age of thirteen. She has also done modeling and has plans to continue modeling very soon. While balancing her education and other extra curricular pursuits, she has written a book for teenagers and young adults, ” Don’t Like School? Don’t Go,” which will shortly be published in the US.In addition to these accomplishments, Eugenie is a lifetime member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Golden Key International Honors Society. She is also a student ambassador for AMU. Eugenie has also given eight oral presentations in fields, such as psychology, teaching physics and chemistry, the use of online software programs, and intelligence studies and has won the first places each time. She has also written two children’s books and has co-authored a multidisciplinary research book for college students. She recently contributed a chapter for a case study book in science education, which will be published this June by IGI Global publishers.Eugenie, originally from Manchester, England, hopes to be the U.S. Secretary of Defense and also work for the United Nations in order to improve the standards of the country at the domestic and international levels. Accordingly, Eugenie was recently named as one of the top thirty thinkers under thirty by the Pacific Standard. She plans to pursue a J.D. and open her own law firm to further help the U.S.
